What are the elements
of good design?

Good design communicates the message you want to get across and inspires the best possible results. This can be done in many different ways, but good design always "attracts" rather than "distracts."

I use carefully-chosen images, animations, and other graphics to add interest and draw visitors into reading your information.  The right "look" can help establish your image as professional, organized, and efficient. It can attract the kind of response you want. The wrong look can have the opposite effect.

Animations and spinning logos are eye catching, but if they don't relate well to what you are offering, they can take away from your intended message.

If someone goes through the trouble and potential eye strain of reading a ticker-tape message darting across their screen, the message better be meaningful.

What good are bells and whistles that just make noise?

There are other concerns too, that are specific to web design. Graphics need to be optimized to download quickly. In addition, there are the big issues of browser compatibility and how to make your site look good on the many different monitors that are currently in use.

Many web users are frustrated when they have to scroll right and left to see the whole page. Others wonder why so many web sites have information down the left side with so much empty space to the right. This has to do with the different screen resolutions used on different monitors. I can help you define your target audience and determine the best way to optimize your site.

Each site I develop is thoroughly tested in a wide variety of viewing circumstances, and the pages are created to look great at different screen resolutions. I also do what it takes to insure that the sites work well with current and earlier versions of the most popular browsers.

What is good navigation?

Good navigation will provide a way for your visitors to get information quickly, and to move throughout your site comfortably, without getting lost.

Navigation considerations include the question of whether to use frames, java script, flash menus, and/or possibly a site map, as well as understanding how to simplify your site structure in the most logical way.

Please browse my partial list of sites I've designed, and notice the clarity of design and streamlined navigation systems.
